The first thing anyone must learn to respect when in a woodworking workshop is shop safety.  Everyone, at one time or another, has tried to ignore the safest way and opt for the fastest way.  Hopefully you have never had something go horribly wrong, but not everyone is so fortunate.  So it is key to develop this discipline early and keep to your routines.  Most important, before you even unpack a new tool, is to READ the directions.  Directions are printed for a reason.  Reading the directions will offer you an understanding of how the tool may react under certain conditions and knowing how the tool is designed to perform will undoubtedly make you better prepared.  The directions will also inform you of the limitations of your tool.  Never try to exceed them by tampering with the components. 

Another important item for your woodworking hobby is eye protection.  There are some variations, like simple safety glasses or a full face shield.  Which protection you choose depends a lot on your project, but you should always protect your eyes.  This is an item that you can’t be cheap about.  Try to stay away from the dollar bin and spend between $ 10 and $ 15 for a descent pair of safety glasses and remember to replace them at least once a year.  If they get scratched up and you have a hard time seeing with them, then you will be more likely to just not use them at all.  This is a great go-to gift for that woodworker in your life because it is an item that is always in need. 

Protecting your ears in your workshop is also a priority.  Many of the tools in the shop run at very high decibels and over a prolonged time can cause some hearing damage so it is always a good idea to wear ear protection.  There are several options to consider.  They sell disposable earplugs in large packs that you can keep on hand in your shop, but I have found that earmuff-style ear protection works fine for me.  They do make headphone ear protection that offers you the option to connect your iPod but I wouldn’t recommend this because it is always a good idea to keep an ear out for any strange sounds coming from your tools.  It is difficult to hear the machinery with Aerosmith blasting out in your head.

Protect your lungs and protect your life.  When working in a home workshop, space is sometimes a luxury you just don’t have.  So be sure that when you are sanding or finishing you open windows and doors to allow air to circulate. Also don’t forget your mask.  Like hearing protection, there are many choices ranging from cheap disposables to expensive O2 masks.  In my shop I have the cheap medical masks to filter the large dust particles when sanding and I have a more expensive Hepa mask that I use when I paint or stain.  Ventilation is also important because saw dust is very combustible.  The slightest spark could turn your shop into a ball of fire when there are tons of wooden dust particles in the air and no ventilation.

Your hands are your most important tool, right?  Other personal protection to consider having on hand in your workshop for your safety are disposable gloves for finishing work and heavy work gloves or anti-vibration work gloves for when you’re sanding.  An apron is always nice to have as well.  Remember to always keep loose clothing, hair, and jewelry tied up and free from machinery. 

You can’t forget about protecting other who may enter your shop.  Be sure to let everyone who may venture into your shop know that they should never startle you when a tool is running to wait until you turn off the tool before approaching.  It is also a good idea to invest in some tool locks.  These make it impossible to run the tool without the key and this is especially important if you have children in your home or near your shop.  Also, don’t leave the key on a nail near the door - be sure to take it with you.
